Understanding Client Matter Numbers

The Client Matter Number is a standard number used in the legal industry to identify accounts across a firm (typically displayed in this format: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). The maximum number of characters that CCH allows is 32, and its parts may be broken down as follows:

Part one:   XXXX = Client Number, or the top-level organization

Part two:   XXXX = Matter Number, which is a firm or regional office within the top-level organization

Part three: XXXX = User ID Number, which is the researcher at the firm or regional office

NoteThe format of the Client Matter Number is determined by your firm. This is only an example.

By entering the Client Matter Number when you log into IRN, the system can then track the time spent researching for the identified client.
