A federal jury in Riverside,
California awarded Mattel, the maker of the Barbie doll, $100 million in a
copyright infringement lawsuit against MGA Entertainment, Inc., the maker of the
Bratz doll. The jury concluded that the Bratz doll designer developed the Bratz
concept while Mattel employed him. While Mattel believed it was entitled to at
least $1 billion, the amount of damages was limited to profits derived from only
the first four Bratz dolls, which actually came from the designer's drawings (Mattel,
Inc. v. MGA Entertainement, Inc., U.S. District Court for the Central
District of California, August 26, 2008, to be reported).
