Training Tip for IntelliConnect

Help your firm’s summer associates help themselves this summer! IntelliConnect’s secondary sources are the perfect choice for summer associate projects, which are often expansive and broadly defined. Sources such as Wolters Kluwer topical law reporters and treatises can quickly ramp up new users on the various areas of law they may encounter this summer. Here are a few tips to help you in acclimating your firm’s summer associates to the valuable content in your subscription*:
*Your firm’s subscription may or may not include access to the linked sources below.

5 Tips for Helping Summer Associates Learn More About IntelliConnect:

  1. Titles A-Z: Find Wolters Kluwer Reporters/Guides and Answer Books:
Use Titles A-Z to find Wolters Kluwer reporters on various topics. Reporters are topically organized with editorial explanations written in plain English. Simply type the word Reporter into the Title Finder search bar and retrieve an alphabetical listing of all reporters on IntelliConnect. Because some reporters use the word Guide in their titles (e.g., Business Franchise Guide), try searching in Titles A-Z using the word Guide, too. And to quickly see if there is an Answer Book on a topic, just type Answer Book into the Title Finder search bar. These are great sources in a succinct Q&A format. Titles A-Z makes it easy to find Wolters Kluwer secondary sources.
  2. Navigators:
Point your summer associates toward the popular Navigators to aid in finding direct and on-point documents without searching! Type in the word Navigator in Titles A-Z and you may see navigators for Health Care, Securities, and Tax. (Alternatively, you can click on Tools/Smart Charts in the blue-shaded area atop the Browse Tree menu to see navigators and other tools by area of law.) All are point-and-click and don’t require any knowledge of Boolean search logic. Launch the Securities Topic Navigator for example, and follow the screen prompts to find your topic and link directly to the relevant documents on IntelliConnect. It’s quick and easy!
  3. Wolters Kluwer Compilations for Explanations and Primary Sources in Context:
The benefit of many Wolters Kluwer reporters is that they combine expert editorial commentary and primary sources organized by topic, so it’s easy to get a big-picture overview without a lot of effort. Browsing by expanding the plus signs in the left pane enables researchers to see how documents are related to the content surrounding them. For example, securities law researchers can open the Federal Securities Law Reporter to learn more about prohibited transactions by investment advisers by simply expanding the plus sign next to the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, and then opening Prohibited Transactions by Investment Advisors—Sec. 206 where they will find a compilation in order by law sub-section, with annotations, regulations, releases and explanations interspersed throughout, and Current Developments at the end, providing the latest cases and releases dealing with the Investment Advisers Act. It’s so convenient with everything in one place!
  4. Citation Templates by Topic:
Proper citation format is not required when looking for documents by citation. Just click on Citations in the blue-shaded area at the top of the left pane, and then choose your area of law (e.g., Federal Tax). To find an IRS Cumulative Bulletin cite, for example, just open up Primary Sources, select Rulings, and displayed in the right pane will be templates for all kinds of rulings, with convenient examples of their formats listed right on each template. Simple and easy!
  5. Searching without Connectors:
Boolean and proximity connectors are not strictly required on IntelliConnect, so word searches are very simple. When key words are typed into the search bar without connectors, the search engine automatically links all the terms with an implicit “and” connector. (Phrases such as “search and seizure” may be forced by the use of quotations to override this assumption.) A pop-up word wheel assists in typing in your terms, and remember that the online Thesaurus finds synonyms automatically by default. So, good searches are easy to come by when assisted by the power of IntelliConnect!

We at Wolters Kluwer Law & Business wish you and your summer associates successful searching! Please let us know how we may assist you in your efforts.
