Supreme Court justice praises Areeda and Hovenkamp treatise

The renowned Aspen Publishers treatise Antitrust Law: An Analysis of Antitrust Principles and Their Application by Phillip E. Areeda and Herbert Hovenkamp was recently mentioned in the ABA’s Antitrust journal entitled “Appellate Advocacy in Antitrust Cases: Lessons from the Supreme Court.” In the article, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is quoted as saying that “practitioners would prefer to have two paragraphs of [the Areeda-Hovenkamp] treatise on their side than three Courts of Appeals or four Supreme Court Justices.” He also points out that the Court has cited approvingly to the treatise and/or an article by Hovenkamp in eight of the last nine antitrust cases.

Antitrust Law: An Analysis of Antitrust Principles and Their Application is available in print from Aspen Publishers at www.aspenpublishers.com. The Internet format is available through your CCH Account Representative. The treatise is also part of the CCH Antitrust and Trade Regulation Integrated Library.

Six titles of International Encyclopedia of Laws now available online

This unique Kluwer Law International series consists of 25 distinct reference works, and now six are available online in PDF format: IEL Labour Law, IEL Constitutional Law, IEL Energy Law, IEL Environmental Law, IEL Intellectual Property and IEL Social Security Law.

Each of these subsets is itself encyclopedic in nature, covering a major field of law with penetrating country-by-country monographs that describe how each national legal system governs the relevant field.

These national monographs are supplemented where relevant with international monographs which detail the workings of supranational organizations that affect the field of law in question, or offer an overview of the field from a comparative perspective. These online versions provide quick and easy browse capabilities when searching for a particular chapter or content. A convenient “Update History” link gives a list of recently updated titles. WHITE PAPERS

Comparative Analysis of Non-U.S. Bank Regulatory Reform and Banking Structure

In seeking to restructure the U.S. financial regulatory system to address the current financial crisis and prevent future banking woes, an examination of other countries’ experiences may prove valuable. In this white paper, Gregg D. Killoren, J.D., CCH Associate Writer-Analyst, examines the collective experience of Sweden, Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia with observations as to what may or may not translate well to the U.S. financial system.

Training Tip for Loislaw products . . .

What Boolean connectors and wild cards are utilized for Loislaw word searching?

Loislaw uses a simple, effective connector system that is a little different than other systems. Loislaw utilizes four connectors: AND, NEAR, OR, NOT and a few special characters:

dog AND cat = both 'dog' and 'cat' must be found in the document

dog NEAR cat = 'dog' and 'cat' must be no more than 20 words apart (default). You can specify a different proximity by tacking on a number. For example, dog NEAR5 cat will find all documents with the term 'dog' no more then 5 words apart from the term 'cat'.

dog OR cat = one or the other term (or both) must be found in the document

dog NOT cat = 'dog' must be found while the term 'cat' does not occur in same document.

* (asterisk) = truncator. For example, child* = childless, childish, childbearing, children, etc.

? (question mark) = replaces a single character. For example, s?nk = sink, sank or sunk.

~ (tilde) = Thesaurus. Activated by placing ~ (the tilde symbol, top left of your keyboard) in front of a term. For example, ~deal will also search for arrangement, contract, and obligation.

For additional information, click the “Online Help” link at the bottom right of any Loislaw display to open additional instructional material.
